911 To Mom

(PSAP) WRAP AROUND PROGRAM

Communications in mother-daughter relationships often get stuck in a rut. With our eye on today’s family issues, which may bring long-term separation and abandonment, this organization began seeking strategies to assist in improving mother–daughter relationships. Therefore, we asked our Board of Directors: How can we assist families and change destructive patterns of conversations and behaviors that have developed over the years within their interpersonal relationships? This collaboration resulted in very positive outcomes.

We are proud to note that Tiandre’s Treasure Chest Foundation, Inc. has added 911 TO MOM to its list of program offerings.  911 TO MOM is a “Wrap Around” service that provides a PRIVATE SAFETY ANSWERING POINT (PSAP) for young women ages 7 years old and up to request emergency assistance from their Mom/Caretaker.

For many women, mother-daughter relationships are the most intimate and intense of their lives. But there is also a fundamental irony: most mothers see their job as being helpful and protective, making sure their daughters look their best and lead the best possible lives.

Studies show that there are three primary complaints daughters have about their mothers:

  • They’re overly critical;
  • They’re demanding; and
  • They try to ‘parent’ them despite their need for independence.

In response, mothers’ perspectives often reveal how they feel their daughters:

  • Make poor choices;
  • Don’t listen to them; and
  • No longer have time for them.

    There is quite a history behind the 911 system in the United States. Let’s reflect for a moment. The first call to 911 in the United States was placed in February 1968. The concept of 9-1-1 can be attributed primarily to the recognition of characteristics of modern society, i.e., increased incidences of crimes, accidents, and medical emergencies, inadequacy of existing emergency reporting methods, and the continued growth and mobility of the population.

    The three-digit telephone number “9-1-1” has been designated as the “Universal Emergency Number,” for citizens throughout the United States to request emergency assistance. It is intended as a nationwide telephone number and gives the public fast and easy access to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).

    Our Services will take place across four phases of effort:

    Engagement and team preparation; initial plan development; implementation; and transition. During the Wraparound process, a team of people who are relevant to the life of the child or youth (e.g., mom/ caretaker, family members, members of the family’s social support network, service providers, and agency representatives) collaboratively develop an individualized plan of care, implement this plan, monitor the efficacy of the plan, and work towards success over time.

    A hallmark of the Wraparound process is that it is driven by the perspectives of the mom/caretaker and the child or youth. The plan should reflect their goals and their ideas about what sorts of service and support strategies are most likely to be helpful to them in reaching their goals.

    A Wraparound plan typically includes formal services – including research-based interventions as appropriate to build skills and meet youth and family needs – together with community services and interpersonal support and assistance provided by friends, kin, and other people drawn from the family’s social networks. After the initial plan is developed, the team continues to meet often enough to monitor progress, which it does by measuring the plan’s components against the indicators of success selected by the team. Plan components, interventions and strategies are revised when the team determines that they are not working, i.e., when the relevant indicators of success are not being achieved.

    We will be providing comprehensive care through the Wraparound process with a high degree of collaboration and coordination among the child – Mom/Caretaker and family-serving agencies and organizations that make up the system context of our Wraparound program. Our agencies and organizations will work together to provide access to flexible resources and a well-developed array of services and support in the community. We will provide any additional community- or system-level supports that are necessary for Wraparound to be successfully implemented and sustained.

    What we do

    Our Theme of Six Collaborative Components are as Follows:

    Community partnerships:

    Representatives of key stakeholder groups, including families, young people, agencies, providers, and community representatives have joined together in a collaborative effort to plan, implement and oversee Wraparound as a community process.

    Collaborative action:

    Stakeholders involved in the Wraparound effort work together to take steps to translate the Wraparound philosophy into concrete policies, practices and achievements that work across systems.

    Fiscal policies and sustainability:

    The community works to develop fiscal strategies to support and sustain Wraparound and to better meet the needs of children and youth participating in Wraparound.

    Access to needed supports and services:

    The community develops mechanisms for ensuring access to the Wraparound process as well as to the services and supports that Wraparound teams need to fully implement their plans, including evidence-based interventions.

    Human resource development and support:

    The system supports Wraparound staff and partner agency staff to fully implement the Wraparound model and to provide relevant and transparent information to families and their extended networks about effective participation in Wraparound.

    accountability:

    The community implements mechanisms to ensure the right children and youth are enrolled in Wraparound; to monitor Wraparound fidelity, service quality, and outcomes; and to oversee the quality and development of the overall Wraparound effort.

    Tiandre’s Treasure Chest Foundation, Inc.’s 911 TO MOM  program is a resource that will present elements and practice principles that will expand positive growth and development activities at the team, organization, and system levels.
